Hey, glad to have found your site and appreciate your thoughts on this challenge. My kid spilled some coffee on my wife's MacBook A1342 (2010 version 2.4Ghz) a couple of years ago. It stopped working and has sat in a drawer for two years. We recently opened it up and found that the battery swelled so we replaced it this week. It appears to be charging (amber then green light), but the laptop won't turn on. There is no response to the power key. I disassembled the device to look for corrosion and cleaned up a few spots with 90.1% alcohol. The HDD appears to be good because we were able to access the data from another Mac using an adapter cable. I don't have a methodical test plan to identify my root issue(s). Ideally, it would be great to buy a replacement laptop, minus the HDD, and drop our working HDD into it. I just don't know a better option since I'm not a proper technician and don't have a test plan. Thanks for your help and wisdom.

Hello John, and thank you for this section on your website.

I came across you, thanks a post about repair a Macbook A1181...

I'm from Venezuela, and as you might know, we are in a kind of shortage of all. So replacing machine and or repairing them, could be complicated.

This is the macbook from my mother. My mother only used it for web browsing. Nothing more. It was my old machine and I give to her when I buy another one years ago. It was working fine, but a say she told me, she saw a strange green thing in the screen. But things continue normal and one day the computer didn't work.

Since I'm very enthusiast with repairing computers, from the old 512 to more or less minis from 2011, I thought I could see what's going on. And yeah, I'm only 30. It's just a hobby.

Well, the thing it's I would like to buy another one but the country situation don't leave to do so much:
The frontal led turns on, the fan and the hard drive, but nothing more. Sometimes, the machine still 'on' until I disconnect from the wall. others turns off very quickly. I disassembly, clean all, search for corrosion under the mother board. Put direct to sun, but nothing happens.

Due to your experience, I would like to know if you have any idea of what could be the problem. The machine was the black one with 2.2ghz. The battery get inflated, but we notice very quickly, and we take off... even this happen later of the real problem.

I will appreciate a lot any help from you.

Kind regards
Abel

Hi John,

I've been working on a small-scale refurbishing operation and would love you hear your input on how to efficiently test/defrag/image multiple HDDs at once. The least efficient way I've been using is to do it all within Apple's disk utility, one at a time. I'd like to set up a USB array to do disk health testing on used drives, then drop an updated image to, say, 5 drives simultaneously. Do you have a particluar hardware & software setup that works (or any that DON'T work) well for this purpose?

Thanks!
Aaron

I'm from the Linux world (first PC in '98 was Winblows, evicted Bill Gates end of '99 and never looked back). I acquired my first (and, sad to say, likely to be last, as Apple is turning into a Microsoft clone) Mac, a refurbished mid 2009 MacBook, a few months ago. I upgraded it to OSX El Capitan, and have been happy with it so far, but the battery compartment cover is peeling off. It's just glued to the battery. Apple customer service couldn't tell me what type of adhesive I should use to put it back in place. I'm hoping someone here can point me to the right product.

Hi John,

On the White MacBook (Late 2007 Santa Rosa) A1181

13" / 2.2 GHz / 2 x 1GB RAM (DDR2 667) / 120 GB HD

Still unable to boot it...

I have:

1) Used a known working AC adatper to try to boot it (didn't work)

2) Tried starting up with and without the battery, only with the AC cord

3) Charged the Battery (charged successfully) with another known working White MacBook

4) Tried your procedure for starting up with RAM Modules removed one at a time (even cleaning gold connectors, trying other known-working RAM Modules, and making sure they are seated correctly)

All to no avail...

I have not tried the magnet thing...

Any suggestions?

Max

My Ti Book M8407 667 Mhz SNQT15101FLY1 has the following, consistent symptoms.

If I hold the power button on at length, there will be one long tone, followed by flashing white led, followed by the normal boot chime, followed by a black screen. I also hear the hard drive spinning up, or trying to. The battery is good, the PRAM battery shows 3+ volts? The charger light is green. Zapping the PRAM doesn't do anything.

What do you think?

Best regards,

I purchased a MacBook Air 13" mid 2013 that had coffee spilled on and dried in a sauna (heat room). I have cleaned the spills, replaced the screen backing sheets and the keyboard keys. The laptop is now usable but not 100% ok. The battery showed no capacity, had the X logo at the top bar, and wasn't charging so I removed it and am now using a power adapter secured by tape. The strange thing is the power adapter light is solid amber. I think it should be green when no battery is present. SMC and NVRAM have been reset a few times, and it is running the latest OS 10.9.5.

The other problem is that the CPU frequency doesn't get above 0.80GHz (1.3GHz model), and the fan doesn't speed up from the base 1200 rpm under a multi-core stress test. The CPU temperature doesn't get above 57°C.

Could the SMC chip be fried, or does the OSX have a CPU clock frequency limit when no battery is present?

Hi,

Black Macbook 1 (late 2006) recently encountered a wine spillage. Some keys stopped working next morning, I took it into a (non-apple) place locally for damage limitation, they cleaned it out, dried it and said it would need a new keyboard.

It carried on working with a few missing keys. Then one morning I shut it down, packed it up, took it on a trip in the car and when I next switched on, nothing happened. I tried resestting the SMC, nothing. At this time, the green power light would still show when the power adaptor was plugged in, and when a battery was also inserted, the adaptor showed orange and the battery showed charging on the green dots, until it was full and the adaptor light went green.

In the meantime, I bought Black Macbook 2 from ebay (don't know the year, might be 2008, the heat sinks are same as 1 (curvy - I been watching your v helpful yt vid :D). It was advertised as not charging the battery, I assumed that I could use the working battery from 1 (had a similar problem with 1 a while back). When I picked up 2, the guy said the battery had just started to charge again, implying it wasn't the battery at fault. This was the case for the first few days, although sometimes the laptop said 'Not charging', sometimes it thought it had no battery, sometimes restarting set it charging again, and sometimes tapping the case near the charging point also did this. It hasn't charged anything for a few days now.

Then I found a cheap replacement keyboard (3) on ebay, so I got that for 1, hoping that would make it work and I could re-sell 2 (at the time I didn't want to take 2 apart at all, since it did actually work, now I've got used to it I'm swapping bits between them).

I've tried keyboards 2 and 3 in macbook 1 and it won't switch on. So now I've put the original keyboard back into 1. Then I re-inserted a battery into 1 and connected the power, the battery didn't start to charge. The adaptor only showed green (after a wait of many minutes) for batteries 1 and 2. BUT I pressed the power button and then either battery started to charge. I've repeated that process several times now, and it does the same every time.

I've got 2 power adaptors, and the behaviour of macbooks 1 and 2 doesn't change whichever I use, they both seem to work, so I've ruled them out. I've also tried both hard drives in 2, and they are both fine.

So, 1 is alive somewhere on the inside and charges batteries, and seems to get something from the keyboard although it won't switch on. What's the next best course for this? Would it still be charging the batteries if it was the logic board at fault?

2 is still confused. When I put the battery that came with 2 back in, the power adaptor is green, the indicator says 'Not charging' and the cycle count is 3, which is about what it would have done since I bought it (I have no battery life history from the previous owner other than that it 'started to charge again' the day before I bought it). When I put the battery from 1 in (which is fully charged) the status shows 100%, source is 'power adaptor', light is green, cycles are 40 (about right, I got it in August), and the laptop dies without the adaptor.
When I took the keyboard out, there was a metal part round the charger port top left which seemed to have moved, I popped it back into place hoping this would be the cause. It did charge a battery for a bit (first time in days), then it gave up and went back to the power adaptor on green, laptop goes dead as soon as I disconnect the adaptor. Is this the logic board or something or is it likely to be some simple connector that needs cleaning/replacing/wiggling?

As an extra, having started taking them all apart tonight, the logic board in 1 which was 'cleaned' does appear on close amateur inspection to have bits of gloop on it, maybe I should clean it myself?? Also I found a bit of metal wire just hanging about on top of the logic board (caught round the wires top left). It's a long rectangular C-shape, suspiciously slightly smaller than the (UK-shape) return key, which I'd popped off before I took it to the shop, as that was one of the keys that stopped working. They re-fitted the key. It might not be, i'm just saying... it's that kind of wire but maybe it could have come from somewhere...?

Sorry this is a long question, hope it makes sense and be grateful for any advice offered.

Hi,

I was watching your Logicboard video and was wondering if you could help me with a question.
That is that I have a 2 Ghz Core Duo Macbook Black.
I would really like to replace the Logicboard with a Core 2 Duo Logicboard, in order to be able to run 64-bit applications.
Can you help me find a compatible Core 2 Duo Logicboard?
Is it possible to figure out if I need 3- or 4-wall without opening the Macbook up completely?

Thanks

I have a late 2009 Macbook that my father in law dropped and ice cube on and did not realize it until the next day. Now the computer will not start-up. My question is, is there a common component on the logic board that shorts when this happens? I see that most all Macbook problems stem from liquid damage and all seem to just replace the whole logic board to fix them which cost a lot of money. It would make more sense to just replace the one or two damaged surface mount parts that probably shorted. I do understand that if the bad part is an intimidated circuit or programmable ROM that it may be best to just replace the whole board. I can't seem to see any visible damage to the board which makes the problem harder to solve, and I don't know how to trouble shoot the board. Thanks for any help. Feel free to tell me to stop being cheap and buy the whole board if you like.
