I have recently got into reselling MacBooks and the like, and have come across John’s videos a lot — which are very helpful! I am thinking of buying a lot of Firmware Locked Mac mini 2018s that have network accounts too but had a question. I saw John’s video over the Restore method for T2 chip machines (like these Mac mini 2018s) which definitely takes out firmware locks, but would this method also take out the network account “feature” I guess it’s called? Or is this network account feature some type of MDM/DEP that can’t be removed in any way? Thanks for the help!

Hi John,

Thanks again for sending me the link to this forum.

I wanted to ask you some questions I had after watching the interview you did with Louis Rossmann. I thought it was a VERY interesting interview. I am not sure who is at fault when it comes to taking people doing great work like you off amazon. I have a sneaky suspicion that its apple. But Louis made a good point when he said that you may see a drop in sales, but if you have your own site with the right promotion you should be ok.

QUESTIONS:
~ TLDR - Id like to do it to myself and would love some pointers ~

1. Do you think that this is still a profitable business after amazon made their decision on refurbished apple products?

2. If I were to get started as a complete noob, where would you recommend someone go to get into something like this?
I am interested in getting into the repair game as well. I am sure that will get many "sighs" filled with contention. It has always interested me since I have a computer background and love working on them for fun already. I live a pretty simple life without much need for a lot of money and I think this might be a cool thing to do for some money on the side.

3. Would you consider this your main focus as a business?
I notice you do glitch art as well. I ask because I have a few passions that Id like to follow like music, art and podcasting. This is something I would love to do and do already for friends and family for no charge. I'm just not sure if it is "Do-able" for a source of income. I'm happy to keep doing it for free for those I know.

I am sure these questions are loaded ones. Any direction would be much appreciated!

Any light that can be shined over this matter would be great. I also do not think it is related to water damage as there is no signs of it anywhere.

I have tried baking it, and cleaning what looks like corrosion with alcohol to no avail.

This one's been bothering me for a while. Friend does weird thing to her computer, doesn't know what, and now any time she presses the Right Shift key, the active window pulls away and sort of looks like Expose, but isn't. Here's a picture of me trying to use TextEdit (couldn't take a screenshot since pressing any key ends this behavior):

i59.tinypic.com/wsvk7b.jpg

The left Command key causes all open windows to fly up above the viewable area, as if activating some 'show desktop' feature. I've already gone through all the Keyboard shortcuts and reset everything. Her keyboard works fine otherwise, and another keyboard shows the same symptoms, meaning it's not the keyboard. I couldn't find any obvious keyboard shortcut alternative programs installed on her computer, so I'm really not sure what's causing this. Any ideas?

I have a 2011 iMac whose drive has failed but the data can be recovered per the Genius Bar at Apple. To retrieve data I want to use my old Mac Mini. I have a fire wire 400 connected to the Mac Mini (host) and a converter (800) plugged into the other end the iMac for Target Disk Mode (TDM). When I hold down the T key on the TDM the symbol comes up and is moving on the screen. When I start the Mac Mini, host, I do not see the TDM on the desk top. What are the steps I need to go through in order for the Host to recognize the TDM drive? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi john,

The MacBook had coffee spilt on it. I only turned it upside down and cleaned it with a rag. I finished a class I was logged on to and put it asleep thinking everything was ok. Got home and it would not power on. I'm just wondering if I can jump start it to rule out logic board issue. The board is different then your YouTube post where you point out the jump points.

Is it true the points are at the keyboard ribbon cable? Is the ribbon cable accessible without tools? Could it be under a small metal cage that is has the nintendo screws. Or is it not possible to jump start these newer unibodys. I don't really have time to do the keyboard replacement but it would be nice to know if it was a total loss.

A little history.. I did replace a key board and LCD screen in a 13 inch white MacBook a few years back for my girlfriend with a friends tool kit. I again have no tools and in a panic last night tried to remove the bottom of the MacBook pro with a knife and when it slipped I managed cut a peace if my thumb off. Boy that last screw. Looks like no stitches but is a cut. I'm lucky to have a thumb as the little pocket knife is vary sharp. Now that I think of it I could care less about the computer. Just looking at my thumb.

Thanks Play safe and do not panic as I did.

I am not sure if you deal with Mac Pro's. I have a Mac Pro that works great one it goes to the OS, but before it boots into the OS it runs what looks like a test screen ( black back ground with white text ) for about two pages then boots normal. Do you have any suggestions on how to get it to boot directly to the OS like it should?

Thank you

Hi!
I just purchased a used macbook off of a buddy of mine. His hard drive crashed and he ended up just going out and buying a new mac. So I went out and purchased a new hard drive for the machine and started it up. I managed to get snow leopard installed, then things started to go south.

First, when clicking on the trackpad "button", it would register as a "secondary-click"; constantly opening up little menus all over, no matter what i clicked on. And then out of nowhere, the keyboard stopped working. The caps-lock button remained lit, and even pressing that there was no change to the light.

I didn't have time to really mess with it so i left it open, not connected to any power, and went out for a few hours. When i came back the mac had gone to sleep. The white sleep light was going on and off, so i tried to wake the machine. Nothing. I plugged it into power, nothing. So i took the battery out and placed it back in, connected the power supply and tried to power it back on. NOTHING! No sounds, no humming, no fans, NOTHING! When connecting the magsafe it will light green, and then go to amber as if it were charging, but still nothing on the mac starts.

So now I'm not sure what my options are here: should i assume it's the logic board? something regarding the magsafe adapter? a faulty keyboard? water damage?

Any help?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Faithfull old test machine does not power up any more.

* 6 months ago it would boot if main battery was removed.
I think Apple PSU ring would go from orange to green then

* Now, PSU stays orange, even when removing PRAM battery pack.

Anything easy to try? I can try re-soldering power socket, but it looks like tags are good?

I've had my 1 GHz titanium PowerBook from new, about a decade ago and it's been very reliable. A couple years ago I got a cheap generic main battery from China. Never stellar, over the last few months battery life has really diminished and I'd get a total out of power shutdown (no sleep) at 85% charge. So I ordered a new battery, which hasn't arrived yet.

But yesterday I found the machine would not power on at all (Superdrive spins twice, hard drive spins, fans come on and stay on, screen stays totally black/unlit, no startup sounds at all).

There have been no hardware or software changes for years. I found that Control-Cmnd-Power combo (I think, I tried so many), worked once and then I backed everything up. I then did your PRAM disconnect/reconnect trick and it worked, but when I put the main battery back in, the machine would stop booting again. I then tried your trick while running with a constant wall connection, without the main battery and that worked, but each time I put the case back I'd again lose the ability to boot. I then tried without the PRAM battery at all, and that worked, until I put the case back on the machine would not restart again. Having done that a couple times, I couldn't get it to start at all, even with the case off.

I left it plugged into the mains with no PRAM or main battery for one last go and got a good startup chime, but no screen and all the other symptoms the same.

Each time I reset using the logic board button to the top right under the key board. Sadly I don't have an Apple power adapter to check the orange-green light. I have ordered a PRAM battery.

What else can I try/is likely to be the problem?

Should the machine be able to run properly without a PRAM battery? If it can't does that indicate something else is wrong? Is the main battery a distraction/irrelevance to troubleshooting?

I'm sorry if this rambles but I wanted to cover everything and really want this old machine to pull through... Thank you for a great site,

Christopher
